SPC substrate reveals 30 % of its true quality in the first three seconds—if you know where to look. A quick glance at the cut edge tells buyers more than glossy brochures or price tags ever could. Here’s a simple field guide to judging SPC core quality on the spot, without gadgets or labs.
1. Colour Consistency
A good core looks like pale biscuit dough—same shade across the cut. Swirls, dark streaks, or chalky patches signal recycled resin mix-ups or filler overload. Uniform colour equals uniform strength.

2. Texture & Feel
Rub your thumb across the cut. A smooth, almost powdery surface means fine limestone and balanced PVC. Gritty or sandy feel hints at cheap fillers that weaken the plank and dull cutting blades.
3. Density & Weight
Drop the off-cut on the floor. A dull “thud” and solid bounce tell you the core is dense and stable. A hollow click or flaky edge means air pockets or poor compression—trouble under heavy trolleys.
4. Clean Cut Test
Snap the off-cut with your hands. A clean break with smooth edges shows good resin bonding. Jagged, crumbly breaks mean weak binding—those planks will chip during install or heavy use.

5. Smell Check
Sniff the fresh cut. A faint, clean plastic scent is normal. Strong chemical or chalky odour suggests excess fillers or low-grade additives—bad news for indoor air quality.
6. Quick Comparison Trick
Keep one “perfect” off-cut in your bag. Hold it beside each new batch—same colour, same feel, same break? You’ve got consistency. Different look or feel? Reject or request a new batch.

7. One-Sentence Summary
Same colour, same feel, same break = good SPC substrate. Anything else, ask questions or ask for samples.
